The number 11 is written as 10 and 1 or 十一.
The number 12 is written as 10 and 2 or 十二 and so on.
Likewise 20 is written as 2*10 or 二十, 21 as 2*10+1 or 二十一, 300 as 3*100 or 三百, 4000 as 四千.

Basically, the number is a multiple of the largest unit followed by the next largest unit and so on, e.g. 1234 is written as 一千二百三十四 This is similar to the English numbering system which express 1234 as one (一) thousand (千) two (二) hundred (百) and thirty (三十) four (四)

Unlike the English numbering system, the Chinese has a unit for 10,000 (萬) and one for 100,000,000 (億). So the number 10,000 (ten thousand) is expressed as 一萬 and 300,000,000 (three hundred million) as 三億 while 1,000,000 (one million) is simply expressed as 一百萬.

Note that the number 305 is not written as 三百五 but rather 三百零五. 三百五 refers to 350, not 305 and we need to insert a 零 before 五 to denote 5. Likewise 一千六 refers to 1,600 not, 1006. As to numbers containing internal zeros between units other than 0 to 9, it is preferred. although not strictly, to insert a 零 to denote the interior 0 e.g. 一千零六十 to denote 1060.

兩 is used to denote 2 for units of 1000 (千) or above e.g. 兩千、兩萬. The number 200 can be expressed as 二百 or 兩百 while 20 is always expressed as 二十 and 2 as 二.
